Why Patients Choose Aligners
Aligners are removable, which means you take them out to eat and to clean your teeth. That makes oral hygiene more straightforward than with fixed braces, and it means no restrictions on the foods you can eat.
They are also less visible than traditional braces, which many adult patients prefer.
What Aligner Treatment Involves
Treatment begins with an assessment. We scan your teeth with our intraoral scanner and take any imaging needed, then plan the movements required.
Once your aligners are made, you wear each in the series as directed and attend regular reviews so we can check that teeth are tracking as planned. Some cases require small attachments bonded to the teeth to allow certain movements.
At the end of treatment, retainers are needed to hold the teeth in their new position.
The Part That Depends on You
Aligners only work while they are being worn. They generally need to be worn for the great majority of the day and night, removed only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and cleaning.
If aligners are not worn consistently, teeth do not track as planned, treatment takes longer and additional aligners may be needed. Patients who find it hard to maintain that consistency often do better with fixed braces, and we will discuss this openly at your assessment.
Suitability
Aligners suit many cases but not all. Complex movements, significant bite corrections and certain rotations may be better managed with fixed braces or by a specialist orthodontist. We will tell you honestly what is achievable in your case, and refer you where a case would be better managed elsewhere.
What to Expect During Treatment
Teeth are often tender for a day or two after changing to a new aligner. This is normal and usually settles.
You may notice a slight change in speech in the first few days, which typically resolves as you adjust. Treatment time varies considerably depending on what is being corrected.
