Protection for Sport and for Grinding
A custom-fitted mouthguard is one of the simplest ways to protect your teeth. Whether you play a contact sport or grind your teeth at night, an appliance made to fit your mouth offers better protection and comfort than a generic option.
New'Gen Dental Surgery makes custom mouthguards and splints for patients of all ages.

Sports Mouthguards
Dental injuries in sport are common and can be expensive and complicated to repair. A knocked-out or fractured front tooth in a young person can lead to a lifetime of dental treatment.
A custom mouthguard is made from an impression or digital scan of your teeth, so it fits closely, stays in place and allows you to speak and breathe more easily than an over-the- counter option. Because it fits properly, people are far more likely to actually wear it.
We recommend a mouthguard for football, rugby, hockey, basketball, boxing, martial arts, skateboarding and any other activity with a risk of impact to the face.
Mouthguards for Children and Teenagers
Children and teenagers need their mouthguard checked regularly, as growth and changing teeth affect the fit. A mouthguard that no longer fits offers less protection.
We check the fit at routine appointments and let you know when a replacement is needed.
Splints for Grinding and Clenching
Many people grind or clench their teeth, often during sleep and often without knowing. Over time this can wear the biting surfaces, cause tooth sensitivity, crack teeth or restorations, and contribute to jaw and facial discomfort.
An occlusal splint is a custom-made appliance worn over the teeth. It does not stop the habit, but it protects your teeth from the forces involved and can help manage the symptoms.
If grinding is contributing to jaw joint pain, we may discuss this alongside your assessment for TMJ and jaw pain.
Care and Replacement
Rinse your mouthguard after use, clean it as instructed and store it in its case away from heat. Bring it to your dental appointments so we can check the fit and condition.
Mouthguards and splints wear out. How quickly depends on how heavily you grind and how often you use them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Over-the-counter mouthguards are bulkier, fit less securely and can make speaking and breathing harder. A custom guard fits your teeth, stays in place and is more likely to be worn.
We take an impression or digital scan at your first appointment, and the mouthguard is fitted at a second visit. Our team will confirm the timeframe when you book.
Many funds pay a benefit towards custom mouthguards under general dental cover. Check your policy, and we can claim on the spot through HICAPS.
Children’s mouths change as they grow and teeth come through, so the fit should be checked regularly and replacement is often needed as they grow.
No. A splint protects your teeth from the forces of grinding and can help with symptoms, but it does not stop the habit itself.
Yes, and it is particularly important during orthodontic treatment. Let us know you are in braces so the appliance is made appropriately.
