A Brighter Shade, Professionally Supervised
Teeth whitening lightens the natural shade of your teeth using a professional whitening product. It is one of the more conservative cosmetic treatments available, because it does not involve altering the structure of your teeth.
At New'Gen Dental Surgery, whitening always begins with an examination. Whitening a mouth with untreated decay, gum disease or a cracked tooth can cause discomfort and will not address the underlying problem.

Why Teeth Discolour
Teeth darken for a range of reasons, including age, staining from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, some medications, and trauma to an individual tooth.
The cause matters, because it affects how well whitening is likely to work. Surface staining generally responds well. Discolouration coming from within a tooth, such as after trauma
or root canal treatment, may need a different approach, and we will explain what is realistic for you.
Professional Whitening at Our Practice
After your examination and a clean, we discuss which approach suits your teeth and your circumstances, and what result is realistically achievable.
Professional supervision matters. We check that your teeth and gums are healthy first, protect your soft tissues, use products at appropriate concentrations, and monitor how you respond. Over-the-counter and online whitening products vary widely in quality and are used without an assessment.
What to Expect
Whitening does not produce the same result for everyone. Your starting shade, the cause of the discolouration and the natural characteristics of your teeth all affect the outcome.
Whitening does not change the colour of fillings, crowns, veneers or bridges. If you have existing restorations in a visible position, they may need replacing after whitening to match your new shade. We will point this out before you start.
Temporary sensitivity during or after whitening is common and usually settles. Tell us if you experience it, as we can adjust the approach.
Keeping the Result
Whitening is not permanent. Teeth gradually pick up stain again, and how quickly depends on your diet and habits.
Reducing staining foods and drinks, not smoking, brushing well and attending regular cleans all help. Some patients top up periodically, and we will explain how to do this safely.

Frequently Asked Questions
When professionally supervised and used as directed, whitening is a widely used treatment. We assess your teeth and gums first, because whitening is not appropriate for every mouth.
That varies. Your starting shade and the cause of the discolouration both affect the outcome, and we will give you a realistic expectation before you begin.
No. Whitening only affects natural tooth structure. Existing restorations keep their current shade and may need replacing to match afterwards.
Some patients experience temporary sensitivity, which usually settles after treatment. Let us know if it occurs so we can adjust the approach.
It is not permanent. Teeth pick up stain over time, at a rate that depends on your diet and habits. Some patients top up periodically.
We generally recommend deferring elective whitening. Please tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding so we can advise you appropriately.
