Crowns and bridges are long-standing restorative treatments. A crown covers and protects a damaged tooth, while a bridge replaces a missing tooth using the teeth on either side for support.
At New'Gen Dental Surgery, our in-house milling machine and furnace allow certain crowns to be fabricated at the practice.

A crown covers the whole visible part of a tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength and appearance. A crown may be recommended when a tooth is:
- Heavily filled, with limited remaining structure
- Cracked or at risk of fracture
- Broken or worn significantly
- Treated with root canal therapy, particularly a back tooth
- Restored on an implant
Where a tooth has lost a great deal of structure, a large filling may not hold up under chewing load. A crown distributes the force across the tooth rather than concentrating it on a weakened area.
Dental Bridges
A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. The teeth either side of the gap are prepared to support crowns, and a replacement tooth is joined between them, fixed in place.
A bridge is fixed, so it does not come out for cleaning. That means cleaning underneath it, with the tools we will show you, is essential to keeping the supporting teeth healthy.
The main consideration with a bridge is that healthy adjacent teeth need to be prepared. Where those teeth are untouched, an implant may be a more conservative alternative. We will explain both.
What Treatment Involves
The tooth is prepared, and a digital scan or impression is taken. Depending on the material and the case, the restoration may be milled at the practice or made externally, and a temporary restoration may be fitted in the meantime.
At the fitting appointment we check the fit, contact points, shade and bite before cementing the restoration. Your bite is adjusted so the new restoration is not taking uneven load.
Looking After Crowns and Bridges
Crowns and bridges still rely on the tooth and gum underneath them. Decay can develop at the margin, and gum disease can affect the supporting teeth.
Brush thoroughly, clean between and underneath the restoration as we show you, and attend regular check-ups so the margins can be monitored. If you grind your teeth, a splint may be recommended to protect the work.
