Oral Appliances for Snoring and Diagnosed Sleep Apnoea
Snoring happens when the airway partly narrows during sleep. For some people, the airway repeatedly collapses and breathing is interrupted, which is known as obstructive sleep apnoea.
New'Gen Dental Surgery provides custom-made oral appliances that may help some patients who snore or who have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea.

Diagnosis Comes First
Sleep apnoea is a medical condition and it needs to be diagnosed medically, usually through a sleep study arranged by your doctor or a sleep physician.
We cannot diagnose sleep apnoea, and an oral appliance is not appropriate for every patient. If you snore heavily, wake unrefreshed, feel excessively sleepy during the day, or a partner has noticed you stop breathing during sleep, please speak with your GP.
Where you have a diagnosis and an oral appliance is considered appropriate, we can work alongside your medical practitioner.
How an Oral Appliance Works
A mandibular advancement appliance is worn during sleep. It holds the lower jaw slightly forward, which can help keep the airway more open.
The appliance is custom-made from scans or impressions of your teeth, so it fits securely and comfortably. Over-the-counter devices are not made to your mouth and can fit poorly, which affects both comfort and results.
Assessment at Our Practice
Before making an appliance we assess the health of your teeth, gums and jaw joints. Appliance therapy requires enough healthy teeth to support the device, and it is not suitable where there is untreated gum disease, significant jaw joint problems or insufficient teeth.
We will explain what an appliance can realistically achieve for you, and where CPAP or another medical treatment is more appropriate, we will say so.
What to Expect
An adjustment period is normal. Some patients notice jaw tenderness, increased saliva or a temporary change in how their teeth meet in the morning.
Over the longer term, oral appliances can cause tooth movement or bite changes in some patients, which is one reason regular reviews are important. We monitor your teeth, bite and jaw joints while you are using the appliance.
Results vary between individuals, and an appliance does not work for everyone.
